Topic Two: Pattern and Ornament, Part 3: Quadrant abstraction
Quadrant Abstraction
For this assignment, the quadrant I was assigned was letter B. This was the bottom left corner of the front view of my version of the Hepplewhite chair. I used two different types of mediums to create this art piece which was sculpture and photography. Sculpting the chair out of clay is what I used to make this piece ambitious for me. I first made the top part of the chair and used my fingers along with wide popsicle sticks to shape the wave of the front of the chair. Next I molded the two chair legs into rectangles then pressed in the jewels to match the pattern and ornament on the original drawing. I painted each piece individually with gold metallic paint to create more dimension and attraction to the eye. Before allowing the clay to dry, I then connected the chair legs to the seat by sticking three toothpicks into each chair leg. After waiting three days for the sculpture to dry, I decided to take photographs to further show ambition and to fulfill one of the purposes I have set personally for my body of work. To photograph the sculpture, I laid it down on a flat white surface then directly stood over it to make it seem as if it's actually standing on its own. I took a series of photos with a 35 millimeter lens in different angles to show the detail put into the sculpture and the shape. To create the montage I picked a photo of the whole sculpture, one of both chair legs and an up close of the jewels. I then edited the photographs on photoshop and scaled all 3 so they can fit onto one layer. This project really moved me expand my mind and ideas on how to execute my vision successfully while combining a new medium (sculpture) that I have never tried before with one I am most familiar with(photography).
